Dear Parents,
Tomorrow is Day 6 of the North Carolina field trip. This means that it will be the last day of the field trip activities (boo hoo). Tomorrow, we should have a great finale to the field trip. First, we will be going to the Pine Knolls Aquarium, which is located in Pine Knolls Shores, NC. After that, we will go to the MCAS Cherry Point Air Show, which is located in Havelock, NC.
We will leave in the morning and arrive to the Pine Knolls Aquarium first. The NC Aquarium at Pine Knolls Shores “takes you across the state on an aquatic journey from the mountains to the sea.” The aquarium has five galleries that depict the aquatic habitats and inhabitants of each major zone – Mountain, Piedmont, Coastal Plain, Tidal Waters and Ocean. On this trip, the students will get to learn the basics of the four fundamental areas of oceanography: physics, biology, chemistry and geology. Explore the many features of the earth’s ocean and its processes, while gaining a better understanding of the interconnectedness among humans, the ocean, weather, climate and natural resources. A live ocean animal may even make an appearance! We will get to see jellyfish, trout, sharks, and many other types of marine animals. After we are done at the Pine Knolls Aquarium, we will go back on the bus and head to Havelock, NC for the MCAS Cherry Point Air Show. If we have time, we will get something to eat before we go there because we will be viewing the night show. This trip will be the ultimate experience in aerial entertainment. We will get to witness the stunning pyrotechnic displays, the thunderous afterburner flybys, the awesome jet powered rocket truck, and the graceful skydivers and gliders. I feel that this trip is necessary because of the fact that it should be a great time and it will be a good review of what we have learned about planes. I think that this will be the grand finale of our very fun field trip. NC Field Trip: Day 5
Dear Parents,
Tomorrow is Day 5 of the North Carolina field trip. This means that we will be going to the Civil War Heritage Walking Tour, which is located in New Bern, NC. After that, we will go to the Lynnwood Park Zoo, which is located in Jacksonville, NC.
We will leave in the morning and arrive to the Civil War Heritage Walking Tour first. New Bern is surrounded by a wealth of Civil War history, making it an important player on the stage of Civil War landmarks. Better known in the South as “the War between the States,” the war, as depicted by Southern storytellers, was anything but civil. Nevertheless, New Bern played a strategic role in shaping history in the South during this turbulent era. This footprint in history is worth a walk to investigate.
While at New Bern, we will get a tour at a number of key locations. For example, the sign at Union Point Park indicates a frightful scene as the Union fleet and army descended upon the helpless town just after the major battle. Another location we will go to is the Harvey Mansion. Built in 1798, this handsome and imposing brick structure served as both a warehouse and as elegant living quarters. Recently, the historians of New Bern found out that this mansion was used during the Civil War as temporary barracks for those Union soldiers assigned guard duty. These are only two of the many places that we will visit on the walking tour in New Bern. I believe that the children will learn a lot about the Civil War and how it relates to the state of North Carolina. NC Field Trip: Day 4
Dear Parents,
Tomorrow is Day 4 of the North Carolina field trip. This means that for the duration of the trip we will be located on the coast of NC. Tomorrow is going to be a very cool and relaxed day. The two places we will be going to are Kitty Hawk, NC and Kill Devil Hills, NC.
Tomorrow is most likely going to be a very nice day. On our way to the sites tomorrow morning, I will have a lesson about planes and have the children make paper planes. When we arrive to Kitty Hawk, we will visit the Wright Brothers’ Memorial. Kitty Hawk, NC is very well known for flight because the Wright Brothers were the inventors of the airplane and their first one was flown there. After we visit the memorial, we will find a spot to test out our paper planes. After this activity, we will get on the bus and head to Kill Devil Hills, NC.
At Kill Devil Hills, we will visit a historic lighthouse and we will spend the rest of the time on the beach. On the beach we will hopefully get to play some games and go, under supervision, of course, into the water. We should have a great time.
At both of these sites, I believe that the children will have a spectacular time. They will get to learn a great deal of information and they will get to relax a little bit from all of the running around we have been doing. After the completion of both trips, we will get something to eat and go to the hotel, where we will have some kind of activity.

Tomorrow is Day 3 of the field trip. This means that we will in central North Carolina. Tomorrow, we will be going to the Ackland Art Museum, which is located at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill NC. After the museum, we will go to The ArtsCenter, which is located in Carrboro, NC.
We will leave in the morning and arrive to the Ackland Art Museum first. Here, we will have a guided tour of the museum. We will do a lesson about art either at the museum or back at the hotel, depending on time. The children should have a great educational time on this trip. They will get to see the famous artwork of Peter Paul Rubens, Eugene Delacroix, Andy Warhol, and many other famous artists. I am really hoping that we will be able to do some kind of lesson plan while we are at the museum. No matter what though, the Ackland Art Museum trip will be worth it. At the completion of the show, we will head to the hotel, get something to eat, and go to sleep. NC Field Trip: Day 2
Dear Parents,
Tomorrow will be the first day of activities on the field trip. We will be going to two sites: the Hiddenite Gems Emerald Hollow Mine located in Hiddenite, NC, and the Emerald Village & North Carolina Mining Museum located in Little Switzerland, NC. In both trips, the students will get to learn about earth science and actually be able to mine for stones.
We will leave in the morning and arrive to Hiddenite first. When we arrive, our group will be assigned to a guide who will lead us to our first activity. There are four activities total, each lasting about half an hour. The first activity is an earth science lesson in which the students will learn about natural earth movements such as volcanoes, mud slides, earthquakes, plate tectonics, and how gemstones formed in hydrothermal vein formations. Most of the things they will learn in this lesson will be a reinforcement of what they have previously learned. After the lesson, the students will get to do three other activities which involve actually mining for gemstones. Hiddenite Gems name these activities "Creeking", "Sluicing", and "Surface Collecting." I believe that the students will have a very fun time in all of these activities.
Upon completion of the four activities, the students will have lunch time and I will give them about half an hour of free time, in which I will allow them to go to the gift shop or even mine a little bit more if they want to. However, after that half hour, it is back on the bus and we head to Emerald Village. After Hiddenite, we will go back on the bus and head to Emerald Village. When we get to the village, we will be supplied with a tour guide. On this trip we will get an educational slide show at the site's indoor theatre about the history of the Emerald Mines. We will then get a tour of the underground Bon Ami mine and the North Carolina Mining Museum. We will have the opportunity to see historical displays, a waterfall, and the hidden mine. After this, we will visit the Gemstone Mine flume and the students will be able to search for gemstones again. If we have any time after, we will take the opportunity to be toured at the sites free displays, which include the wildlife display, the black-light mineral display, the model railroad display, and the antique Music Museum. Edison National Historic Site Field Trip
Next month we are going on a field trip to the Edison National Historic Site, located in West Orange, NJ. This trip is going to go along with my lesson plan which involves electricity and light. This trip will take a whole school day; the children will come to school, we will take attendence, and then leave.
The site takes a little over an hour to get to, so we will be there for about three hours or so. There should be no problem getting the children back on time to leave for home. When we get to the site, we will get a tour of Edison's lab and the students will have to fill out a handout. After the lab, we will take a lunch break. It is reccommended that the students bring brown bagged lunches. After lunch, we will visit Edison's former home. We will then return home. There will be no chaperones or money needed for the trip (just bagged lunches). If you cannot supply their child a lunch, please notify me ASAP. Also, if you have any questions, please ask.
Please make sure that your child is dressed properly for the field trip. We are going to be inside for most of it, however it is important to know that we will also be outside. Also, if your child cannot behave on the trip, a punishment will be served accordingly.
You should receive a permission slip in the mail within two weeks. I want these slips, signed, by a week before the trip. If I do not get a slip, your child will not be able to attend the trip. They will still be expected to attend school, however. Work will be given to them accordingly.
